Celebrate Valborg in Sandhem
Valborg Celebration in Sandhem
Welcome to celebrate Valborg in Sandhem — a warm and atmospheric spring evening filled with tradition, community, and joy. On April 30, we gather at Kohagens beach to welcome the arrival of spring together.
The celebration begins at 9:00 PM with songs by the church choir, followed by a spring speech, the traditional Valborg bonfire, and a beautiful fireworks display lighting up the evening sky. There’s something for everyone — bring your family and friends and enjoy the lakeside atmosphere.
The Sandhem Community Association is the organizer and will be on site selling grilled and boiled sausages, soft drinks, and coffee. Join us for an evening full of warmth, laughter, and springtime spirit.
Why We Celebrate Valborg
Valborg, celebrated on April 30, is one of Sweden’s most cherished spring traditions. Its roots stretch back centuries to European folk customs marking the transition from winter to spring — a time when communities gathered to welcome light, warmth, and new beginnings after the long, dark season.
The tradition is closely linked to Walpurgis Night, named after Saint Walpurga, and over time evolved into a celebration centered around fire, music, and togetherness. Bonfires were historically lit to ward off evil spirits and predators believed to roam as winter ended, while also symbolizing protection, renewal, and hope for the coming season.
Today, Valborg is above all a social and joyful occasion. Across Sweden, people gather with friends, family, and neighbors to sing traditional spring songs, listen to speeches about the arrival of spring, and share a moment of community around the glowing fire — celebrating not only the season, but the simple joy of being together.
