Ryttarens Peat Factory
Discover Ryttaren Peat Factory
Ryttaren Peat Factory, which is located between Kättilstorp and Sandhem, is one of Sweden’s best-preserved peat facilities from the early 1900s. The site includes the factory, machine house, workers’ housing, sawmill, and a narrow-gauge railway with original locomotives and wagons. It has been a listed cultural heritage site since 2012.
During the open season, you can join guided tours and ride the peat train out onto the bog while learning about life and work at the factory. A 2.5 km nature trail across the bog offers visitors a peaceful walk through this unique landscape.

Historical Peat Cutting in Sweden
Peat cutting has a long history in Sweden and played an important role in the country’s industrial development. In the early 20th century, peat was primarily used as fuel and bedding in agriculture. The government supported the drainage of peatlands to enable extraction and increase agricultural output – actions that had major environmental consequences.
Today, perspectives have shifted. Many peatlands are recognized as vital carbon sinks, and rewetting previously drained areas is a growing part of Sweden’s climate strategy. Ryttarens Peat Factory stands as a living example of how the peat industry’s history is being preserved for future generations.
